خلال فترة حكمه، استخدم القذافي وسائل الإعلام فقط من أجل لتأمين سلطته، حيث كان المحتوى مسيساً إلى حد كبير لصالح النظام. كما أن أي انتقاد للقذافي يؤدي بصاحبه إلى السجن أو إلى ما هو أسوأ.

منذ قيام الثورة عام 2011، شهدت وسائل الإعلام في تونس تغييرات جذرية. فقد نجحت في المرور من محتوى متشابه ومحدود، إلى خط بعيد عن النظام، وبالتالي توفير انتاج متنوع. كما يشهد الإطار القانوني ومؤسسات الدولة المنظمة للقطاع عدة اصلاحات. والأهم من ذلك، بات في استطاعة الصحافيين خوض تجربة الصحافة السياسية.
